"My artwork is about LSF (French Sign Language) and the development of ASL (American Sign Language). Mr. Laurent Clerc brought LSF to America from France when he came to this country with Mr. Gallaudet to establish the first American School for Deaf children. They helped merge and develop our sign communication in America." • Title: LSF to ASL – Clerc & Gallaudet • Author: Teresa Baumgartner • Age: 17 • Gender: Female • Country: Wisconsin, United States of America • City: Delavan • School: The Wisconsin School for the Deaf • Grade 2

"I'm Deaf, It Doesn't Mean I'm Blind. Why did I pick to draw this picture? As a Deaf person, I have experienced people showing me braille and they ask if I need braille. I do not. I can see! I have also been asked if I can read and write. Of course I can! I feel frustrated with this because I love to read books. Deaf means that I can't hear anything, but I can still see and use my other senses. Deaf people are very capable. That is why I drew this picture." • Title: Eye • Author: Lucero Uriostegui • Age: 14 • Gender: Female • Country: Wisconsin, United States of America • City: Delavan • School: The Wisconsin School for the Deaf • Grade 8

"My artwork means that to be Deaf to me is that Deaf people use their eyes to see anything instead of using their ears. Deaf people mostly use their eyes for eye-contact with other deaf people. I think eyes are important for deaf people to have. Some deaf people can be sometimes hard of hearing by use of cochlear implant or hearing aids. If Deaf people didn't use anything like cochlear implant or hearing aid or lip reading, deaf people can use their eyes to see sign language or everything. If a hearing person has no clue about Deaf culture, maybe hearing or public schools could teach hearing people what being Deaf is like. Deaf people use cochlear implants, hearing aids, reading lips, and sign languages. They use their eyes mostly and they use their hands more than hearing people do. Some speak. But hearing people do things differently than what Deaf people do; hearing people use their voices and ears. I drew a picture of eye-contact because my artwork is related to Deaf culture via eye-contact. That is why I drew the picture to show that I am Deaf. I feel that I am Deaf because I don't use my ears, cochlear implants, read lips, or wear hearing aids. That proves I'm Deaf and that I just use my hands to use sign languages. Some “pros” for hearing people is that it is an easy world for hearing people. A “pro” for Deaf people is being free of annoyances. Cons for being hearing is sometimes sounds can be annoying to hearing people, who still can hear it. A con for Deaf people is that it is a hard world for Deaf people in a hearing community." • Title: Eye Contact • Author: Tao Yi Dallmann • Age: 12 • Gender: Female • Country: Wisconsin, United States of America • City: Delavan • School: The Wisconsin School for the Deaf • Grade 7

"We live our life comparatively easier than people who are disabled. In this painting, the small map which hangs on the milepost shows that the 2 ways of Normal people (which has a hard, long, and complicated road), and the Challenger (which has a easier, short, and simple road). I thought that people who are disabled as a challenger, like people who challenge of really difficult mode, start with some handicaps (physical, or mental). Like the roads on my painting, we can also get some handicaps for the disabled. For instance of a interview, the disabled people can get a easier interview than the other who are disabled. To sum up this, the roads mean the way which have a differnt difficulties to get a goal. Yellow road means for a normal people who didn't live a life with any disability, and the pink one means for a disabled people who always live with disability." • Title: For The Life Challenger • Author: Lee Jin-hyung • Age: 16 • Gender: Male • Country: Republic of Korea • City: Incheon • School: Incheon International High School

Many people are trying to run away and escape when they encounter dangerous situations. Then, What about disabled people who is visually impaired and have difficulty to hear? In the picture above, people all seem to have no difficulties or troubles in doing . This indicates that even though they are the disabled, they look exactly same as the other normal people. Then why wouldn't they have the ability to run away from dangerous situations themselves? Thus, I think it is necessary to prepare emergency exits well so that all people, even the disabled, can get out of exigent situations. • Title: The Same Difference • Author: Yurim Jo • Age: 17 • Gender: Female • Country: Korea • City: Gyeonggi-do Hwaseong-si • School: Hongik Design High School • Class: 01/03/15
